Our Founder Story

"Growing up as a refugee with limited means, I received an opportunity to attend a strong high school in Uganda. That opportunity changed my life. I wanted to create that same opportunity for children in rural Rwanda."

Pioneer School was founded in 2015 with a vision to bring world-class education to rural Bugesera. The founders, Faith Shaw and Roger Shaw, met in the UK in 1983 and later lived in San Jose, California.

Faith's personal motivation came from her own background - she grew up as a refugee in a family of limited means, received an opportunity to attend a strong high school in Uganda, and later wanted to create a world-class school in a deprived neighborhood.

The school was established in Mwendo, a rural village in Bugesera District, because rural families often do not have the same access to strong education institutions as urban families in Kigali.
